Neil Warnock | Kilmarnock Press Conference

Refresh

Manager Neil Warnock sat down with the media on Thursday morning to preview our Scottish Gas Scottish Cup tie with Kilmarnock on Saturday lunchtime. RedTV subscribers can watch in full now.

“Our mood obviously wasn’t so good on Sunday, but we had a chat with them on Monday, that’s as good as we played defensively while I’ve been here. We take the pluses out of it and the training has been very good. I’ve been really pleased with the training. Two more sessions now before the weekend. That’s all I can ask of them.

“I think confidence has been low for a couple of weeks, that comes with winning games. It’s not a matter of that, it’s just a matter of trying to play your normal game, if you can. So, like I said, they’ve been very positive this week. I’ve been really pleased with them. There was no sulking on Monday or Tuesday, just straight into it. That’s what you’ve got to do because life’s too short.

“It’s something that everybody should look forward to, the cup. Since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed cup games and this is no different really, an opportunity to get to a Semi-final. It’s a great opportunity for everybody.

“They’ve got to do their best, that’s all you can ask really. I couldn’t ask any more at St Mirren if I’m honest. I thought they responded really well. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that before. The effort they put in and the way they played, I thought we were really well organised and limited a good side to very few opportunities. So I was delighted with that. Now the cup game, it’s something that everybody should be looking forward to, with no league points at stake as well. The fans will be behind us so I think it’s a good good game to go into.

“Having a cup game this weekend is almost like a breath of fresh air. There’s no league points at stake, like you said, and everybody’s been so desperately trying to get points on board. I think it’s just the type of game we need against a really good side. They’ve had a great season, they’ll be looking forward to it. We’ve got to try and give them a really good game.

“I think everybody needs a turning point, when you’re having a bad run like we’ve had. I thought that was going to be St. Mirren if I’m honest, for 90 odd minutes, but you’ve just got to keep going. You do get kicked in the teeth at times in football, and you’ve just got to bounce back. It’s how you react. Yes, you get down for 24 hours, but then the manager and the staff have got to be spot on and then the players have got to respond and they did that. I thought on Tuesday was a good session as we’ve had while I’ve been here and I’m looking forward to today and tomorrow.

“All I’m concentrating on is trying to be positive and to get a result against Kilmarnock on Saturday. I think that’s all you can do. We have just got to get on with it now. We know there is no point in feeling sorry for yourself. I think you do that for 24 hours. We are in a great job. You have got to realise how lucky we are really in the modern day where so many people are at work. We’ve got a great job. Yes, we’re not doing well at the minute, confidence is a bit low but one good result can turn that.

“In terms of team news, we had a couple of lads who didn’t train on Tuesday, only because they’ve had long term injuries and they’ve had injections in certain parts of their bodies. I won’t tell you who they are but they’re expected to train today. I’m hoping that they’re available and that it’s been planned for quite a few weeks to have this injection on Monday and Tuesday where they can’t do anything. Other than that I think everybody’s everybody’s fit and healthy. Apart from big Rubi who is desperate to play.

“Kilmarnock are flying at the moment, you get what you see and that’s what you get. They know what they’re doing every one of them. We know what we’re going to have to do, we’re going to have to defend very well, and we’re going to have to be better going forward. So I think it’s a good one to have if I’m honest. I don’t see a negative in it. The cup is something different. We’re not going to be talking about league points and I want them to try and enjoy it if they can, it’s going to be hard, but that’s the minimum requirement.

“It’s vital (to have the fans with us). As frustrating as it’s been, there’s nobody more frustrated than me and they must have seen the effort that we put in at St. Mirren. They’ll have gone home just as gutted as we were. I’m asking them to get behind us on Saturday, right from the word go and put everything behind them. Whatever they’re thinking about individuals and get beyond the team, which they do. They’ve been good, they’re a good group and a good set of fans.”
