Under the inspired leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, Aberdeen achieved feats that would forever change the club’s stature in European football.

This year saw the Dons rise to unprecedented heights, securing not just domestic glory but also making their mark on the European stage.

For Dons supporters, 1983 is more than just a memory—it is a source of pride and inspiration, reminding everyone of what can be achieved with hard work, belief, and a never-say-die attitude.

European Glory: Winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup

John Hewitt v Real Madrid

The highlight of 1983 was undoubtedly Aberdeen’s remarkable journey in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. As underdogs in the competition, the Dons faced a series of formidable opponents, yet they remained undaunted. Their journey to the final included memorable victories over clubs like Bayern Munich, one of the titans of European football.

On May 11, 1983, Aberdeen faced Real Madrid in the final held in Gothenburg, Sweden. In one of the most famous nights in the club’s history, Aberdeen triumphed 2-1 after extra time, with goals from Eric Black and John Hewitt. This victory was monumental, as Aberdeen became only the third Scottish club to win a European trophy, and it marked Sir Alex Ferguson’s emergence as a managerial force.

Domestic Success: The Scottish Cup Victory

Aberdeen started the year with a determined focus on domestic success. In the Scottish Cup, the Dons showcased their resilience and tactical prowess, progressing through the rounds with a series of solid performances. The journey culminated in a thrilling final against Rangers at Hampden Park on May 21, 1983.

In a match that tested the nerves of players and fans alike, Aberdeen emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal from Eric Black. This triumph was not just a testament to the team’s quality but also a reflection of their unyielding spirit, as they secured the Scottish Cup for the third time in their history.

European Super Cup Triumph

The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup victory earned Aberdeen the right to compete for the UEFA Super Cup against the reigning European Cup champions, Hamburg. The two-legged affair saw Aberdeen once again rise to the occasion.

After a hard-fought 0-0 draw in the first leg in Germany, Aberdeen delivered a masterclass at Pittodrie, winning 2-0 on December 20, 1983. This victory solidified Aberdeen’s status as one of Europe’s elite clubs, capping off a year of extraordinary success.
