James McGarry has this evening joined Greek Super League side Athens Kallithea on loan until the end of the season.

The left back, who joined the Dons in 2023, heads to Athens in search of valuable game time.

“With Jack returning from injury and Alexander joining us, opportunities for James will be limited and he is at an important stage of his career where he needs regular minutes on the pitch”, said Dons boss Jimmy Thelin.

“He’s going to a competitive league where there is a lot to play for so we’ll monitor his progress and believe this will be a really valuable loan for the player.”

The 26-year-old New Zealander joined the Dons in 2023 from Central Coast Mariners.

The left-sided defender had come through the ranks at Wellington Phoenix before joining Eredivisie side Willem II. He earned himself a move to Newcastle Jets before Central Coast signed him and he went on to help them win the A-League Grand Final.

James has made 26 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring once.

Everyone at Pittodrie wishes James all the very best during his time with Athens Kallithea.
