The feeling in the stadium was very good
If there were a few nerves in the stands at times before the Dons clinched victory over Queen’s Park, there was a calmness on the park, emphasised by the man who set up the winning goal – Sivert Heltne-Nilsen.
“It was good to win in the end, but I had a pretty good feeling all the game, actually.
“I felt like we were controlling it. We had a couple of moments when we were a little sloppy when they got some chances, but in the second half I had a feeling we had the momentum. If we could just carry on creating things, I had a good feeling that we would get the win in the end. Even though they did a good job with defending in the low block.
“In the talk before the game, it was about continuing with what we are doing and to stay with the plan. There is also a lot of focus on team spirit. I think the team spirit has been really good, also from the players who don’t play yet. They are pushing the players who play. I feel like the whole club and all the players on the bench and out of the squad is helping in a good way.
“It was a different game from what we’ve been used to this season. It’s been a little bit more open before this. They went a little bit faster in the low block. I actually enjoyed it. It was a little bit easier to control it from a midfield position. Instead of it being counter-attack, counter-attack.
“But I was always thinking we would do the job, even if we have to go for extra-time, we would continue to press them. And hopefully we could find a solution to win the game. Luckily we did it in the 90 minutes.
“When you see that other teams lost to lower league teams, it shows what can happen. Actually in Norway, I’ve been the underdog two times. We won the cup two times like this, so I know how a cup adventure can be. It’s like anything can happen. You can maybe think a little bit less of your opponent when they come from a lower league, but I think we didn’t do that. We stayed with the match plan.
“We did some good talking at half-time that helped us win the game. When you’re trying to play against teams who are maybe playing deep, you like to try and get behind them. Topi with his pace is going to be a big weapon for us and also it’s good to have Ester, Shayden, these players also who are threatening behind, because then you open the space for Jamie McGrath and Vinnie who are good in between. Even though we meet a low block, it’s important that we get the runs behind to create the space between. I think we did that good. The runs from the full-backs were great, so we have a lot of players who want to run behind and it’s really important for us.
“The feeling in the stadium was very good. It’s really important that the fans and actually the whole city feel they are with us now. Hopefully we can keep that momentum to just grow and get a little bit better and use it as a motivation for taking small steps all the time.”
