Summer 2024 Squad Update

14 June 2024
Author AFC Media Team

Following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season last month, we can now update you on our first team squad going forward.

We are saying goodbye to first-team players Kelle Roos, Connor Barron, Anthony Stewart, and of course, Jonny Hayes who confirmed he was leaving the Club last week having played over 350 times for the Dons across two spells.

Kelle arrived at Pittodrie in the summer of 2022 and immediately established himself as the club’s number one keeper.

His performances, particularly in the latter half of the 2022/23 season, helped the Dons secure their first venture into European group stage football in fifteen years. A late penalty save against Hibs, in a 0-0 draw at Pittodrie in May 2023, was pivotal in securing third spot in the Premiership.

Over his two seasons, he played 90 matches across all competitions, keeping 30 clean sheets.

Following loans at Edinburgh City and Kelty Hearts, Connor Barron made his Dons debut in January 2022, coming off the bench at half-time in our 3-0 Scottish Cup victory over Edinburgh City at Pittodrie.

He has gone on to make (75) appearances in red, whilst also being a regular for the Scottish Youth International groups.

The club made several offers to try and persuade Connor to stay at Aberdeen, but he has decided his future will lie elsewhere.

In addition, Anthony Stewart will also depart Aberdeen. Then boss Jim Goodwin signed the experienced defender from Wycombe Wanderers in the summer of 2022, and made him club captain for that season.

However, after 28 games in the North-east, he joined MK Dons on loan in January 2023 and has been at Stadium MK for the last eighteen months.

Also departing the club for the last time are youngsters Kieran Ngwenya, Finlay Murray, Kai Watson, Chris Kondolo, Aaron Reid, and Reuben Smillie.

On loan Stefan Gartenmann (FC Midtjylland) and Killian Phillips (Crystal Palace FC) have returned to their parent clubs.

The club remain in discussions with Junior Hoilett about extending his stay at Pittodrie.

We would like to thank each and every player leaving the club for their effort and contributions whilst with Aberdeen and wish them all every success in their future careers.
