Dons deal in defender Jensen
Finnish international Richard Jensen has joined the Club from Polish side Górnik Zabrze for an undisclosed fee.
The left-sided centre back has signed a three-year contract, subject to successful completion of the UK immigration process, following the award of a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) on Tuesday.
“I am delighted to welcome Richard to Pittodrie,” Dons boss Barry Robson said.
“It’s no secret that we’ve been looking to strengthen our defensive options, particularly on the left side.
“We’ve tracked Richard for some time but weren’t sure if we were going to be able to make a deal happen, so I am delighted we have been able to get It over the line with Górnik.
“He is a strong competitor and demonstrated his leadership qualities having been a captain in the past. He is predominantly a left-centre back and equally comfortable in a back 3 or back 4. His quality on the ball and running capacity means he’s well suited for how we want to play, and he’ll be a strong addition for the club.”
Born in Porvoo on the south coast of Finland, Richard started his football career with HJK Helsinki, but moved to FC Twente’s Academy in 2012, aged just sixteen.
He signed a professional contract a year later, playing regularly for Jong Twente in the Tweede Divisie, before making his Eredivise debut for the first-team in January 2018 against Roda.
Later that year, he would join Roda, establishing himself as a regular for De Koempels over the next four seasons. He made 89 appearances for the Parkstad Limburg Stadion side, scoring seven times.
Having captained the Finnish U21 side for numerous years, Richard made his senior debut in a UEFA Nations League qualification game in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium against Montenegro.
The 27-year-old has subsequently gone on to win eight more caps in the last fourteen months.
He moved to Górnik Zabrze in the summer of 2022, and has made 36 appearances for the first team, scoring once, helping the side to finish sixth in the Ekstraklasa last term. He will now join Aberdeen ahead of a busy domestic and European calendar and will wear the number 5 shirt.
