Aberdeen Women return to the Balmoral Stadium this Sunday (25th September) as they host Celtic in the SWPL1. Kick-off, 4pm.

The Dons have endured a difficult start to the campaign having picked up a point from their opening five games. Meanwhile, Sunday’s opponents are unbeaten in their opening five fixtures and currently sit second in the table, with only goal difference keeping them off the top spot.

Thoughts of the Management

“We haven’t had the start to the season that we would’ve liked and the games don’t get any easier. Celtic have had a phenomenal start to their season, winning all five of their games without conceding a goal. In addition to their mean defence, Fran’s team have also scored 29 goals over those five games.

“Celtic were our first opponents in SWPL1 last season after our promotion from SWPL2. It was a great game that day at the Balmoral as we really gave the Glasgow side a game in front of the TV cameras. We also came close to taking all three points when we went down to face Celtic at Broadwood. Bayley Hutchison had us in front in that game and it looked like we might hold on for a win before a late rally saw Celtic nick the win.

“Although their top scorer from last season Charlie Wellings left in the summer, Celtic’s scoring record so far has shown that they are not missing the English striker. They have brought in Amy Gallacher from Hibernian who is a really good player and they still have last year’s Player of the Season Jacynta Galabadaarachchi in the team.

“Despite not having the points that we would have liked from our opening five games, there have been positives to take from those matches. We have given debuts to new signings Eirinn McCafferty and Elena Karkkainen and we recently announced our third signing of the new season in Nadine Hanssen.

“We have also given minutes to several of our talented young players and I’m sure they have learned a lot from the start to our season. We had three teenagers in our back four last week with more youngsters waiting on the bench.

“It is important that these young players get support from the stands as they continue their development on the pitch. It’s not just the youngsters who benefit from your support and all the players and staff are very grateful for every single person that comes along to our games. We are desperate to turn round our fortunes and we need to stick at it, keep our heads up and try to start climbing the league table.” – Co-manager Gavin Beith
