Lewis Ferguson Departs the Dons for Undisclosed Fee
Midfielder signs for Serie A side Bologna F.C.
Aberdeen FC today confirms highly rated midfielder and Scotland International, Lewis Ferguson, has joined Serie A side Bologna F.C. for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old graduated from the Hamilton Academical youth system, making an early breakthrough to their first team before joining the Dons in 2018.
His debut came immediately, on 26 July 2018, in the first leg of a Europa League tie against Burnley at Pittodrie Stadium and he instantly made his name by scoring a spectacular overhead kick in the return leg at Turf Moor.
Lewis quickly established himself as a key member of the first team and he capped a superb debut season at Pittodrie by winning the AFC Young Player of the Year award plus Goal of the Season. In May 2019, he was nominated for the season’s PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year.
The following season, Lewis was the first ever Aberdeen FC recipient of the Young Player award from the Scottish Football Writers. He also picked up the Aberdeen FC Goal of the Season award again for his strike against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup.
In 2020-21 Lewis Ferguson’s stunning strike against Hamilton Accies in October was voted by the Red Army as our Goal of the Season. It was the third season in a row that Lewis collected this award, after picking up the accolade in the two previous seasons for his strikes against Burnley and St Mirren. He again won the AFC Young Player of the year prize. And last season he was selected by his teammates as the Players’ Player of the Year.
A Scotland U21 internationalist during his time at Pittodrie, Lewis was called up to the senior Scotland squad in 2021, making his debut for the national side against Denmark.
During his four seasons at Pittodrie, he made 169 appearances, of which 168 were starts, and scored 37 goals.
Manager Jim Goodwin believes this move for Lewis further reaffirms the Club’s ambition to be the best developer of young talent.
He said: “We want to be a Club that is an attractive option for young players who know they can come here, get important game time, train in excellent facilities, and have opportunities to further their development.
“Lewis has been a fantastic player for Aberdeen. He became an integral part of the dressing room in recent seasons, and he has earned the right to explore other options.
“The Club has helped his development massively. He’s played an impressive number of first team games for his age, not only domestically but in Europe as well, and recently made his debut for his country.
There’s no doubt Lewis has made a brave move, opting to go abroad and face the challenge of football in a different country, but I am sure he will be a success.”
Everyone at Aberdeen FC wishes Lewis all the very best in his future career.
