The Dons are back in action this Sunday as we travel to Airdrie to take on Celtic in the Park’s Motor Group SWPL 1. The sides met on the opening day of the season at the Balmoral Stadium with Celtic running out 4-2 winners. The Dons this week signed goalkeeper Aaliyah-Jay Meach, from Dundee Utd, and will go straight into the squad for the weekend. Co-manager Gavin Beith previews Sunday’s match, to watch in full on RedTV, please click here.
“We have got a couple of players returning, and our new signing Aaliyah-Jay Meach will go straight into the squad. We have almost got a full squad back which is great, it is the first time that has happened since I have been at the club. It is a real positive. We need to have the full squad available as every game is difficult in this league. We will take real confidence from the opening game of the season, where up until the 92nd minute we were in the game. We know that they have improved but we have improved as well. We have maybe had a bit of tougher time over the past few weeks but we are well aware of what we need to do and how we go about trying to take points off of Celtic at the weekend.
“Some of the performances over the past few games have been good at times, but there have been periods of the games where it has been pretty poor and ultimately that costs you. When you start to concede goals it can be really difficult to get yourself back into the games. It is all about consistency, it is trying to play at the level that we know that we can for prolonged periods of the game. If we can do that then we are a match for anyone in this league. If you don’t and other teams are on their game then it is going to be really challenging.
“There has been a mixture of both over the past few weeks but hopefully we can string a consistent performance together both on and off the ball and give ourselves a chance in the game.
“We have moved up a level from last season and teams are ruthless. If you make a mistake they will capitalise on it, especially if it is in and around your own box. It is something that we are aware of and it is part of the learning curve. We need to learn really, really quickly because it is hard when you continue to do that, confidence can start to take a bit of a hit as well.
“The group have responded well, it has been a tough few weeks, they always come in and train really well, they are upbeat and full of enthusiasm. There self awareness is good. They know the things that need to be corrected and it is our job to work together as a group to go and correct that which will hopefully take us into the games at the weekend and get positive results.
“The winter break is coming up, so our objective is to see how many points we can pick up between now and then go into the Christmas period on a positive note. At this moment of time we are reasonably happy with where we are at, we would like to have a few points more but we always knew it was going to be that way. We knew it would be a bit up and a bit down with the nature of the group that we have got and the age and the experience level we have in the team.
“We have a few massive games coming up, starting on Sunday and hopefully we can get some points on the board going into the Christmas period.”
