Ahead of Wednesday’s SPFL Trust Trophy cup tie, goalkeeper and penalty shoot out hero in our victory over Arbroath in the last round, Tom Ritchie, previewed our game with Hamilton Accies. To watch in full on RedTV, please click here.
“The Arbroath game in the last round was one of my best moments at Aberdeen so far. They are definitely the best team that we have beaten. There was a belief in the squad that we could go out and get something from the game. As the game went on we were thinking ‘we can get something out of this.’ Our confidence grew as the game went on and you could see that we were going out and winning second balls. I was nervous beforehand! They are a big team, playing on a big pitch. Once you settle into it you forget who you are playing against.
“Before the Arbroath game we were only all together for a couple of days. It was full of the guys who have been out on loan and then we were all thrown into one team to go out and play.
“It was disappointing to concede a goal so late on. We had defended so well after we had gone in front so it was a kick in the teeth. Arbroath had a penalty shoot out the week before against St Johnstone but only one of the takers from that game was playing against us. I looked it over beforehand and studied where they went in that game. I just had to go and make the saves!
“Saving the first penalty always helps. I have a couple of techniques for saving penalties but I am not going to give them away!
“We are playing another Championship team in Hamilton Accies. I might be in for a busy night! They had a good result at the weekend by beating Inverness CT, who are top of the league and unbeaten, it will be a great test for us. It will be another experience for all of the boys. I have played at their stadium a few times. It is an artificial pitch but I don’t mind it.
“I am out on loan at Huntly for this season, we beat Fort William 3-0 on my debut, it was nice to get a clean sheet. I can’t ask for much more! This season is all about me going out and playing as much games as I can. Last season because of Covid there were no games. I was training with the first team which brought me on massively but I missed playing games. After the Arbroath game I thought to myself ‘How did I go all of last season without playing games!’ The feeling after it was amazing so it is now all about me going out and playing at a competitive level.
“I have the ideal situation at the moment. I train with Huntly once a week and obviously play with them on a Saturday but for the rest of the week I am training with the first team at Aberdeen. Myself, Joe Lewis, Gary Woods and Gordon Marshall all get on really well and we are close. I learn so much training with Joe and Gary everyday, they have so much experience. I learn from them every single day, it is great. They look after me and if they see me do something in training that they think I should change they will tell me. I am glad I have that open relationship with them.
“Being around the first team has brought me on as a person and helped with my confidence. You see different types of personalities and you make relationships with them, it is great.
“I feel like I am getting better with each game and it is about building that up and hopefully getting to a consistent level that I am happy with and always pushing myself.
“For a goalkeeper it is a longer journey to the first team. I hope to keep improving while I am out on loan and come back fighting afterwards.”
Manager Barry Robson and Scott Anderson also sat down with RedTV for an in-depth interview to preview Wednesday night’s game and to discuss the season so far. To watch in full, please click here.
