“The other night, Hedges was on a hat-trick so I let him take the penalty, I would like to imagine if it was the other way around, he would have done the same for me.

“I am on penalties right now so there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to hit it.

“The start of the season wasn’t ideal. We had just got started with the Rangers game and then it all got shutdown again. Everybody at the club was at a real low. There was so many things going on that we could not concentrate on playing. We are getting back up to speed.

“We played well in spells in today like we did last week but in football you are never going to get it your own way, there is going to be spells where you need to dig in and get a result and I thought we did that today.

“When the boys came back in, everybody got around each other, there is a real togetherness in the squad. The gaffer spoke about that and he really wanted everybody to stick together as a team. It shows when we are out on the pitch, we all dig in, everybody fights for each other. We got our goal, we dug in and we kept a clean sheet as well. I thought we deserved our win at a tough place.

“There is more strength in depth in the squad this year and there are boys to come back from injuries. The squad is as strong as it has been in my time here. We have got quality all over the park and when you look at our bench as well, we have got real quality. We have still got top players out injured such as Devlin, Cosgrove and Bryson. We have a lot of competition for places which is obviously a good thing.

“The most important thing about going into the international break is that you go in off the back of a win, there is nothing worse when you lose and you are away for a couple of weeks, it plays on the back of your mind.

“I don’t mind the one-legged European ties; I quite enjoy it. You need to go out and win the game which is good, that is what football is all about and if you come up against a stronger opponent then you it gives you more of a chance as you just need to go out and win it.

“The full squad is on a high, confidence is high and there is a real togetherness.

“I am looking forward to going away with the U21’s and can go away on a high.

“Every boy who gets picked for Scotland U21, there main aim is to get called up to the main squad. The end goal is to go and play for the first team. We spoke at the start of the campaign and nine boys from the last U21 campaign have made it into the full squad so there is a chance there and everybody knows that.”
