Pre Season Friendly – Pittodrie Stadium
21st July 2020
Aberdeen 1 St Johnstone 2
A second half double from Scott Tanser gave St Johnstone a narrow win as football returned to Pittodrie for the first time in more than four months, Bruce Anderson’s fine strike only a consolation for the Dons.
The first half was played at a good tempo, as would be expected with the opening day of the season fast approaching.
Goal mouth incidents were scarce though with the visitors creating the slightly better openings without seriously testing the Dons defence.
At the other end, a piledriver from Lewis Ferguson flew just over, the midfielder also testing Parish with a header late in the half.
In the second half Dean Campbell’s pass was just too strong for McGinn after Niall and Jonny Hayes had combined well to almost force an opening.
Joe Lewis did well to tip a McNamara shot over as Saints looked lively and the introduction of on loan Millwall striker Isaac Olaofe paid dividends for new boss Callum Davidson.
After a good of substitutions from both sides, a foul on the forward by Ash Taylor in the 74th minute saw the ref point to the spot, the penalty being expertly by Tanser. Five minutes later, Olaofe’s bustling run was halted by the Dons defence and Tanser curled the free kick past Lewis from twenty five yards.
Aberdeen saw Ferguson fire a free kick just wide from thirty yards as they fought back, then Bruce Anderson fired a spectacular volley high past Parish from Hernandez’s excellent cross with nine minutes left on the clock.
Despite incessant home pressure, the Perth rearguard repelled all that was thrown at them to record the victory in what was a fairly even 90 minutes.
