Scottish Cup Record v St Mirren
Saturday’s Scottish Cup meeting will be the 15th time that the sides have met in the Scottish Cup and the sixth meeting to take place in Paisley.
The Dons’ first Scottish Cup match in Paisley was in 1912 when the sides played out a 3-3 draw. Aberdeen would go onto win the replay back at Pittodrie by four goals to nil.
The sides have contested one Scottish Cup final when they met at Hampden in 1959. It was to be a day to forget for Aberdeen who were forced to play the majority of the game with 10 men. In the days before substitutes, full back David Caldwell was forced off with an injury in the first half meaning The Dons had to play for an hour with a man short. St Mirren took advantage of their man advantage and ran out 3-1 winners, with Hugh Baird scoring a late consolation for the Pittodrie side.
Aberdeen would next face St Mirren in the Scottish Cup 23 years later when they met in the semi-finals at Parkhead. A Gordon Strachan penalty forced the tie to a replay after Frank McDougall had put the Paisley team ahead. Aberdeen would triumph in the replay at Dens Park with Peter Weir scoring the winner to help the Dons to a narrow 3-2 victory and they would go onto win the cup that year, defeating Rangers in the final.
It would be another 18 years until the sides met again in the completion. The late Hicham Zerouali scored Aberdeen’s 700th goal in the Scottish Cup when his sensational free kick sent the tie to a replay. Zerouali would score again in the replay to help The Dons on their way to the final later that year.
The sides last met in the quarter -final stage nine years ago. Rory McArdle sent the tie back to a Pittodrie replay when he scored from close range late on after the Paisley side had passed up chances to put the tie to bed. Aberdeen would win the replay thanks to goals from Chris Maguire and Scott Vernon. Substitute Nikola Vujadinovic scored into his own net late on to set up a tense ending but the home side held on to progress to the semi-finals.
The last meeting in the Scottish Cup was two years ago at Pittodrie. Aberdeen were 3-1 up at half time, thanks to a Ryan Christie double and an Adam Rooney penalty. Gary Mackay-Steven scored a sensational fourth goal early in the second half to move the Dons comfortably into the next round.
Our last Scottish Cup victory in Paisley came in 1950 when a Harry Yorston double secured a 2-1 victory.
In total, Aberdeen have won seven of the Scottish Cup meetings between the sides and scored 30 goals in the process.
