AFC Hall of Fame | Ally MacLeod to be inducted

24 October 2016

Ahead of our latest Hall of Fame event at Pittodrie on Saturday 12th November it gives us great pleasure to reveal the identity of the third and final inductee who will be honoured on the night.

As we mark the 40th anniversary of Aberdeen’s historic 1976 Scottish League Cup triumph we are delighted to announce that Ally MacLeod will take his place in the AFC Hall of Fame as the man who led The Dons to that trophy whilst masterminding a complete turnaround in the fortunes of the Club.

MacLeod’s impact on the Club should not be underestimated despite only being in the hot seat at Pittodrie for the relatively short period of two years. When he arrived in 1975 Ally inherited a side that was languishing near the bottom of the table but with his guidance The Dons held on to their top flight status in what was the first ever season of the 10 team Premier League.

After retaining top flight status Ally’s attention turned to fulfilling a promise which he made to the Aberdeen faithful, to return a trophy to the Granite City. Remarkably within a year of his arrival MacLeod achieved just that when his side demolished Rangers in the Semi-Final of the League Cup before going on to beat Celtic 2-1 in the Final to lift the trophy at Hampden.

The League Cup success ran parallel with a major upturn in league from as Ally led his side to a third place finish in the 1976-77 season restoring Aberdeen as one of the leading forces in Scottish football.  Unfortunately for Dons supporters Ally’s achievements did not go unnoticed by the SFA and he left Pittodrie to take up the vacant Scotland managerial position in 1977.

With members of his family present, Ally will be inducted on the night alongside Stuart Kennedy and Alex McLeish.

Established in 2004, the AFC Hall of Fame recognises players and managers who have reached the pinnacle of their profession, making a significant contribution to the reputation of this great Club.

This year’s event, sponsored by Rainbow City Taxis, will take place in the AAM Suite at Pittodrie and is sure to be a memorable occasion for AFC supporters, sponsors and partners alike!

Russell McLeod, Managing Director of Rainbow Cars Ltd, commented, “We are delighted to again be back supporting the AFC Hall Of Fame Dinner as we were sponsors of the inaugural Hall Of Fame event way back in 2004. To be part of an evening honouring some of the greats from yesteryear and remembering those glory days is a privilege. We should never forget the joy & happiness each of this year’s inductees brought to Aberdeen Football Club, and indeed the City of Aberdeen!’

Tickets for this prestigious event remain available priced at £79+ VAT and include a 3 course meal, Hall of Fame presentation and Q&A with the inductees before we close with some after dinner entertainment.
