Neil Alexander joins Aberdeen
Neil Alexander has this evening become the Dons third signing of the day.
Following on from defender Callum Morris and fellow goalkeeper Joe Lewis, Neil put pen to paper on a one-year deal.
The highly experienced keeper started his career with Stenhousemuir before moving to Livingston in 1998, where he was part of the Scottish First Division title-winning side in 2001.
In May 2001 he joined Cardiff City for £200,000. During an impressive six-year spell at Ninian Park the keeper played over 200 games for the Bluebirds and helping them win promotion to the English Championship. In July 2007 he put pen to paper on a deal with fellow Championship side Ipswich Town. Alexander made close to 30 appearances for Ipswich during a six-month spell. In January 2008 he moved to Ibrox and spent five and half seasons with Rangers before joining Crystal Palace on a one-year-deal in August 2013.
Alexander then returned North and signed for Hearts in June 2014. In 2014/15 he was part of the side which won the Scottish Championship and also last season helped the Edinburgh club finish third in the Scottish Premiership, a place behind the Dons. During the 2015/16 season Neil kept an impressive 17 clean sheets whilst making 40 appearances.
At International level he was capped 10 times at U21 level and has three full Scotland caps.
After signing his contract this afternoon, Neil then spoke to RedTV and started by explaining how the move came about:
“My agent was in contact with a lot of teams and Aberdeen were one of them and I am lucky that the manager had a bit of interest in me and pursued it.
“I think as a squad Aberdeen have an all-round strength, and as a team they’re good going forward, solid at the back. I’ve always been impressed by them and was whenever I played against Aberdeen last season.
“From those games I know they counter attack really well, have loads of pace, get the ball in the box and cause you problems, they are an attractive team to watch and score goals.
“As a club they have done really well for themselves over the last couple years.
“And Aberdeen have a fantastic manager in Derek McInnes and I’m really looking forward to working under him.
“There are exciting times ahead at Aberdeen and I am delighted to be part of it.
“I know Willo Flood (from my time at Cardiff). He’s a good lad. Every time I see him we have a chat. He’s a friendly face in the dressing room, but I’m sure I’ll get to know the boys over the course of the next couple weeks so I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to get going.”
“Recently I’ve had a couple of good seasons under my belt and I’d like to think I have another couple of years left in me and I want to play. I’ve came here to do that, the manager knows that and we just have to see what happens.
“I’ve got the opportunity to come here and be involved in European football. I’m grateful to the manager for bringing me here and I am really looking forward to the European games and the start of the league campaign.”
The full interview with Neil will appear on RedTV tomorrow.
