Any side that makes it all the way to any cup final will have gone through the mill to get there but Aberdeen’s campaign has thrown up some genuinely memorable games, for all kinds of reasons. It all started off with 6-5 penalty win over Alloa Athletic. After squeezing through against Paul Hartley’s side, a young Aberdeen team very impressively beat Falkirk 5-0 before the 10 men Dons defeated Motherwell 2-0 at Fir Park. That led to a semi final date with St Johnstone, which Derek McInnes’ side famously won 4-0.

Aberdeen skipper Russell Anderson looks back on the road to the final…

“The Alloa game at the start of the cup run highlights the fine line there is between winning and losing. Going to penalties, especially after what has happened to us in previous seasons, it was pretty nervy, but we managed to get through and have grown in strength as the competition has gone on.

“Our performance at Falkirk was excellent, especially as we had a number of players out that night. To go down there and beat them so comfortably spoke volumes for how far we had come at that stage of the season. Many people predicted an upset but we dominated the game and put in a very good performance. All the players did really well and it highlighted the fact that everyone in the squad has played a part in getting us here today.

“The Motherwell game would be up there in my top 10 games. We lost Joe Shaughnessy to a red card early on and when you think Motherwell have such a good home record and have given us a few good beatings there before, you know it’s going to be an uphill battle. To go and win with 10 men for most the game, that was a special evening. I thought we deserved the win too because of the work rate we put in and because we played some good football at times too.

“The semi-final was an important mental hurdle to get over given the club has faltered there a few times recently. Although we were favourites in a lot of people’s eyes, we knew what a good side St Johnstone are. I thought we were very clinical that day, our forward players really made our chances count. We could have played better in the first half especially, but in the end it was a very good win”.
